When Ricardo learned his brother-in-law needed a kidney transplant, he and his family acted without hesitation. “How can you not try?” he says. Despite knowing little about organ donation and transplantation, he, his wife and sister-in-law stepped forward to explore living donation.
Their journey began with screening at St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton. While his wife and sister-in-law were not eligible, Ricardo was approved after the “one day clinic”, a full day of thorough, well-organized testing that saved considerable time. Though the process felt intense, he found it deeply uplifting, knowing he could make a meaningful difference.
About a year and a half later, his brother-in-law was ready for the transplant and Ricardo underwent surgery, which went smoothly. He was home within days and able to watch his brother-in-law’s health steadily improve. Today, more than three years later, he remains healthy—a powerful reminder of the life-changing impact of living donation. Ricardo often jokes about his brother-in-law having a “a second-hand Mexican body part,” a reflection of their close and grateful bond.
Ricardo describes donation as a privilege and is thankful for the opportunity to give the gift of life. He now volunteers with the Transplant Ambassador Program (TAP), supporting others considering donation and sharing his story—particularly within Spanish-speaking communities.
He credits his medical team for their compassion and care, emphasizing that donor health and safety are always the top priority. Ricardo encourages others to take that first step. “You’re surrounded by a team that looks after you as if you were royalty, and you get to witness the incredible impact your gift has on someone’s life.”
Today, Ricardo remains active and healthy—running, advocating, and celebrating the joy of giving. His story is a powerful reminder that one act of generosity can change a life.
